How it works

Learning to drive with a clutch and gears

A manual car has a clutch pedal and a gear stick, and a manual licence lets you drive any car — manual or automatic. Most cars in the UK are still manual, which is why most learners start here.

Lessons begin with clutch control and finding the "biting point" — the skill almost every new learner finds strange at first, and almost everyone picks up within a lesson or two. From there, your instructor builds up gradually: moving off smoothly, changing gear without looking down, and stopping without stalling.

What you'll learn

Building up to test standard

  • Clutch control and finding the biting point
  • Smooth gear changes, 1st through to 5th
  • Hill starts and emergency stops
  • Roundabouts, junctions and dual carriageways
  • Manoeuvres: bay parking, parallel parking, reversing round a corner
  • Independent driving and following directions, as tested on the day

Questions answered

About manual lessons

Is manual harder to learn than automatic?
It takes a little longer for most people, mainly because of clutch control, but it is not difficult — just something that needs a few lessons of practice. A manual licence is also more flexible, since it covers both manual and automatic cars.
How many manual lessons will I need?
It varies a lot by experience and natural pace, but most complete beginners need somewhere between 30 and 45 hours in total. We will give you an honest estimate after your first couple of lessons.
